SPRING AUCTION 2004 RESULTS

BY George Potter

The VRPS Spring auction was held March 20, 2004, at the Grapevine Convention Center, in Grapevine, Texas.

The doors were open at 6:30 am for unloading. By 9:30 am most all the gear that was coming arrived. Our President and auctioneer Jim Sargent started the auction promptly at 10 am. The Oklahoma club (OKVRC) and Houston club (HVRA) spoke about upcoming events this year. Houston is celebrating their 25 th Anniversary this year. Both Bill Werzner from Houston and Clyde Vaughn of Allen, TX, helped Jim Sargent out with the auctioning.

The front desk was handled by Ron & Dee Daniel and Lois Janssen. Stan Baker ramrodded the auction area & setup, along with several helpers. Computer operations were handled by Jim Collings, Bill Jewell's wife and Jim Fields. All our video and audio was handled by Cleo Cherry Holmes and crew. We had 110 people that registered with 146 in total attendance.

It was good to see Bob & Ophelia Nicholson from Kansas, and Tom Peters all the way up from the valley in Texas and George Harris all the way out from West Texas! I even got to meet the elusive Ruth Foster from Dallas. Paul Tucker was there, traveling from Arkansas for the auction.

The final auction statistics were: $19,589.00 total. There were 420 lots with 64 passes. There were also some club donations.

Now there was some pretty interesting equipment that showed up at the auction. A Chelsea Five, Aeriola Senior, Crosley 50, a Sears Roebuck version of the ACE 3B Crosley, a Philco Grand Father clock, several TV's- 2- Predictas, 1- Pilot 3", 2- Motorola 7" and a vertical 7" Sentinel portable, numerous cathedrals, including a Philco 90 which was restored and only went up to - $310. There were 6-1L6 tubes, which went for $30 each (the asking price). A Lot of consoles appeared, but only one was completely restored. The 2 Zenith consoles sold for $100 & $125 respectively, as both needed restoration. There were several horns, with exotic names like Holtzer-Cabot, Mozart Finale; sprinkled with Atwater Kent types, Utah's and Magnavox. A Columbia Graphonola (Victrola) showed up and there was even a wood roller organ. A Philco chairside (Queen Anne style), with a large ornate wood remote speaker. A seldom seen Zenith Radio Wind Charger, (yes, the yellow tail one), with a centrifugal spring balancer and tower base. This one even had an original prop with copper leading edges!

We look forward now to our May 15th and August 21st Swapmeets and of course awaiting our 30th Anniversary celebrations in November .
